Applying For A Tax Identification Number

For the purpose of tax identification, every employer and employee will be issued a tax identification number, also known as TIN, by the country’s Inland Revenue Department or Service.  Today, we will try to differentiate the various identification numbers and how to obtain the tax identification number. Some of the best careers in public administration involve working with these taxes.

A tax Identification Number or TIN is a nine digit tracking number. This number comes in several different forms.

  • Social Security Number or SSN is the most common form of tax identification number issued to individuals. This number is applied by most parents for their child as a dependent for income tax purposes.
  • Employer Identification Number or EIN is a number applied and issued to businesses such as corporations, partnerships, etc. that must pay taxes. This number is required on all tax returns filed with the Inland Revenue Service.
  • Adoption Tax Identification Number or ATIN only applies to domestic adoptions when the adoptive parents are not able to obtain the child’s SSN in time for the submission of their tax returns. The adopted child has to be a US citizen and the adoption must be pending.
  • Individual Tax Identification Number or ITIN is a number issued to non-resident aliens who are not qualified for a SSN. This number is required on the spouse’s tax returns.

The IRS uses tax identification numbers to track taxpayers. The IRS issues all tax identification numbers except for SSNs for the purpose of tracking tax payers. This tax identification number is required when filing on tax-related documents and when claiming benefits.

How to get a tax id number?

Any individual may obtain and submit his or her own EIN application through the official IRS website at www.irs.gov at no cost at all. You may also apply through an IRS-authorized Acceptance Agent or IRS Tax payer Assistance Centre. You can also opt for the paid service of Easy Doc Filing at https://www.govdocfiling.com/ to obtain the tax identification number from the IRS.

Application for an ITIN can be done at any time during the year. To avoid interest and/or penalty for late filing of tax return, application should be through Form W-7 as soon as you are ready to file your federal income tax return, since you need to attach the return of your application. After submitting your application, you will receive your tax identification number with a letter from the IRS within seven weeks if you qualify for an ITIN.
