London’s unmissable cultural highlights at the start of 2020

The end of the decade is finally here. We’ve witnessed a lot since 2010 with some lows and many highs. Steve Jobs and Nelson Mandela have sadly left us, but we’ve also welcomed Prince George and Princess Charlotte into the world. Smartphones have soared in popularity, Donald Trump has been sworn in as the President of the United States.

Brexit is perhaps the keyword of the decade, but there are far more positive things to focus on here in the UK and particularly London. 2012 gave to us the legacy of the Olympic games, with Team GB scooping an amazing 29 gold medals. The games return in 2020, with Tokyo acting as host this time around. So although you can’t take in some Olympic action in the capital next year, there are still many unmissable highlights.

New Years Day

U2 may have claimed that “All is quiet on New Year’s Day” but this certainly isn’t the case in London. Be sure to check out the New Year’s Day parade! This annual event features more than 10,000 performers, musicians, dancers and even acrobats line the streets of the capital.

Theatre Trip

Admittedly, it feels like a 60-day wait until January payday, however, it is the cheapest month of the year to visit the capital. With this in mind, take a trip to the theatre. The capital has a range of shows to suit every audience. Circus 1903, Disney on Ice, Mary Poppins, and English National Ballet’s Nutcracker to name a few.

Lightopia Festival

Explore the trail of light, movement and form at the awe-inspiring grounds of Chiswick House Gardens. The festival aims to restore and interpret the classics, taking the audience into a very different world of expression and raw emotion – think Attraction from Britain’s Got Talent. The designs of the timeless concept of nature are truly fantastic.

Nature Walks Galore

The beginning of the year is as good a time as any to visit Kew Gardens and the Kensington Gardens and any of the other London’s green spaces. Daffodils and crocuses bloom to create a beautiful sea of yellows and purples. The ultimate opportunity to fill your Instagram feed with pretty flowers and cherry blossom trees!

London Art Fair

Thomas Merton once said: “Art enables us to find ourselves and lose ourselves at the same time”. Lose yourself in the works of artists from around the globe at London’s Art Fair, with the chance to browse and buy contemporary British art from more than 100 galleries. Notable workings include advanced graphics, architectural heritage and askew art. The epitome of culture for sure.

The capital is plentiful with wonderful bars, eateries and hotels to stay to top off your marvelous stay. And the Dorsett Hotel, Shepherds Bush is one of many you can enjoy throughout the year. Make sure 2020 gets off to the perfect start with a culturally indulgent trip to London.
