5 Things to Do to Prepare Your Home for the Summer Heat

In most areas of the country, the summer heat can be brutal. While there are a few things you can do to combat that heat, such as keeping your AC on full blast, dressing in shorts, and drinking a lot of water, you need to prepare your home itself for the hot temperatures, as well. The following are just a few of the things that you can do to prepare your home for the summer ahead.

Inspect your air conditioning unit

One of the first things you should do to prepare your home for summer is to have your air conditioning unit inspected during spring. The HVAC companies in Denver get extremely busy when summer hits, and the last thing you want is to be in the middle of a 100-degree heat wave with no air conditioner to cool you and your family down. It’s best to get the AC inspected a few months earlier so that you’re secure in the knowledge that your family will be cool, even when the temperature begins to rise.

Treat your home and yard

With the warmer temperatures comes more time spent in the backyard. Whether it’s around the pool or just grilling on the patio, the last thing you want is to be attacked by mosquitoes or invaded by ants. On top of that, as the weather starts to heat up, pests like roaches, spiders, and other creatures are going to start looking for a way to cool down. This could mean invading your home. To prevent this, schedule an appointment with your residential pest control company to have your yard and home sprayed.

Invest in a better thermostat

Is your thermostat old and difficult to use? One of the biggest things to accomplish before the summer heat begins is replacing it with a new one. It has been said that a good, functioning thermostat can save you quite a bit on energy costs, is more energy-efficient, and will keep you cooler in the long run.

Clean the air vents and change the AC filter

Even after the AC company comes to inspect your unit, you still need to do a few things to ensure the cool air is circulating throughout your home. Check and clean all of the air vents in the home, so that air can move through the home freely. Just one air vent that is blocked can double your electric bill and make the home cool unevenly.

The same can be said for changing your AC filter on a monthly basis. If the air filter is blocked or clogged by dirt, dust, and debris, it’s going to make the AC work harder to cool your home, which results in your home being much warmer than it should be during those hot, hot days of summer.

Invest in energy-efficient fans

Although your air conditioner is working well to keep your home cool, investing in some energy-efficient fans can’t hurt. Not only will they help to keep the rooms of your home cooler, but they will also keep your air conditioner from running as much.

These are just a few of the ways that you can prepare your home for the heat of the summer season. With just a little work on your part, you can save yourself from a hot and sticky home and instead, enjoy cool temperatures in a positive environment all season long.
