Musical Self Reflection: A Universal Language

Music, it is often said, is a language that everyone speaks. In many ways, traveling with a guitar is a great way to meet people, stay creative, and open your heart to the world around you.

Recently, I met Max*, an adventurer who travels around the world with his Ukulele. I stayed for a while at his barn, on the outskirts of Sebastopol, California. During that time, I’d often hear him strumming and playing tunes.

It got me started on playing the guitar.

You should know, I’m not the best guitarist. But, somehow, I got started strumming and have never looked back. It’s become my dear friend. A companion when I’m feeling blue. A bridge to others, when I’m feeling like being part of a group.

If you’ve been playing guitar, you know what I’m talking about. You’re familiar with the power of this beautiful instrument. Whether you’re at home, on a short trip, or on a long journey, traveling with your guitar will help you open up an entirely new dimension.

Playing the guitar has some awesome benefits. It’s not just the music – which is wonderful. It’s also what the music does to the musician, the listener, and the entire environment.

Here are some reasons why music is so amazing.

Boosts Confidence

When you pick up a guitar and play a song, it gives you a boost of confidence.

A lot of guitarists are shy. They use music to express themselves. IN many ways, music is a lot easier than words. It’s a direct link to how you feel – without having to go through the dictionary.

There is something that playing music does for the musician as well as the listener. Many people may not realize it but playing can serve as a form of therapy. Music Therapy is often used to help people to reduce stress, improve communication, strengthen memory, and feel more resilient.

Ignites Creativity

While traveling the world, it’s easy to come across different kinds of creative expressions. In Spain, I heard Flamenco everywhere. In Turkey, the heartstrings of the Oud. In India, the etheric sounds of the sitar. Each country has different musical expressions – and these will inspire your creativity.

Playing the guitar is a form of reflection and a way to get in the creative zone. It’s a great way to lose yourself and be completely immersed in what you are doing. Playing guitar is exactly what is needed for feeling that creative flow.

Guitarists may find that playing different kinds of guitars has unique therapeutic benefits. Explore the different types of music that appeal to you – from flamenco to classical, from free form to rock.

Musicians are finding that different guitars inspire different kinds of creativity. Writing original scores or reworking classic songs, guitarists are stretching their creativity by using different types of guitars. Options include travel/small body guitars, nylon strings, baritones, acoustic-electric guitars, and one-of-a-kind custom guitars.

Builds Connection

We often think of music as a bridge to other people. I’ve found this to be true.

It’s an instant magnet for meeting people through song, instrumentals, and socializing. If you’re playing a guitar, everyone is interested. Live music is something that is happening just in the moment.

This kind of live engagement is precious and impromptu.

Perhaps that’s why musicians love to share their latest ideas. It helps you find your tribe. People who appreciate music are often open-minded, easy going, and ready to share a moment.

When we are around like-minded people, it gives us a sense of well-being and happiness.

Good For Your Health

Music has amazing health benefits. One study from the Netherlands found that patients who practiced 100 minutes a day had a significant drop in blood pressure.

While your personal goals may be more musically inclined, it’s still great to know that jamming and playing are doing wonders for your heart as well.

You probably don’t need a medical study to confirm what you already know. Playing the guitar feels great. Even if you’re tired, lonely, or dealing with some problem – picking up the guitar can change all that. Diving into the music can transform a day like nothing else.

If you’ve been considering music as a travel companion, now is the time to take action. Maybe you want an acoustic-electric guitar, an acoustic, or a travel guitar. It’s up to you. But whatever you choose – make sure to add musical reflection to your creative expression.
