Things To Consider Before Your Cross-Country Move

Are you preparing to move across the country? Perhaps you’re looking for better job opportunities, want to be closer to loved ones, or need a fresh start. Whatever your reasons, making a cross-country move is a huge decision. It involves leaving behind everything you’re familiar with to relocate and adjust somewhere else. As a move this big will impact every aspect of your life, it is vital to think things through. Here are some key considerations.

Cost Of Living

You don’t want to move far away only to struggle financially. Assessing the cost of living where you plan to move can help you determine how much you’ll need to thrive. How much will it cost to purchase or rent a property, pay utilities, buy groceries, and cover transportation? Based on what you have saved or predict you’ll make once you acquire a job, will you be able to live comfortably?

Job Availability

Unless you’re moving cross-country for a promotion or job opportunity, you need to consider the local job market. Are there enough jobs in the area in the fields you have experience in? If so, do these positions offer a decent salary, benefits, and room for advancement? It’s often ideal to start job hunting before your scheduled move. Putting in applications and setting up interviews can give you a better idea of what’s out there before you take the leap.

Schools

Whether you have children or plan on going back for an EdS in School Psychology (or some other degree), it’s a good idea to research the educational opportunities in the state you’re relocating to. Research the types of schools available, the reputation of an educational facility, and online reviews of students and parents to assess whether or not it’s a good fit for you or your children.

Neighborhoods/Communities

Before closing on a house or signing a lease agreement, do your due diligence by researching the neighborhood or community. Your home environment has a lot to do with your emotional well-being and quality of life. You want to ensure that you’ve selected an area where you and those moving with you can feel comfortable, safe, and supported. Find out about the cultures and ethnicities in the town, the crime rates, community leaders, and the types of religious centers in the area.

Politics

You don’t have to be deep into politics to consider this factor. Politicians are the individuals responsible for local laws and programs offered to the community. At the very least,  you want to know that you’re living in an area where those in charge care about you. You want to see that they stand behind their oath to support residents’ needs and interests.

Your Family

While the final decision to move is yours to make, it doesn’t hurt to hear what your family has to say. Take, for example, your children. How do they feel about moving miles away from their friends, family, and things they’ve grown to love? If you’re in a relationship, how will moving this far impact your significant other’s personal and professional life?

Allowing them to express themselves helps them feel better no matter what you decide. It can also give you the chance to find ways to resolve some problems they may be having. For example, if your kids are going to miss their friends, you could visit for a week in the summer or allow them to have virtual gatherings.

When you look for moving tips, you’re often hit with a bunch of advice on how to create a budget, find the right moving company, or pack your boxes. While that information is helpful, there’s a lot more to it than that. As a cross-country move is a significant one, you shouldn’t do it without considering all the information possible. After you’ve thoroughly researched and assessed the factors listed above, you can make a more informed decision for yourself and those you love.
